These past few weeks have been quite eventful, even though I have been trying to take it easy. Last week, around Tuesday I think, I started feeling very minor contractions. They felt very similar to menstrual cramps. I thought about calling the doctor earlier but it wasn't until Thursday that my best friend Jaime convinced to me to call, "just in case." When I finally reached my doctor, he told me to go the the hospital immediately. When I arrived, they hooked me up to all the monitors and sure enough I was contracting. And I was contracting quite a bit, approximately 9-10 an hour. Too many for 32 weeks. So they started me on this awful drug that makes your heart jump out of your chest. It didn't work. Then they tried another drug which didn't touch them either. They also did a Fetal Fibronection test, which is a protein in the cervix, which indicates whether or not labor will start within two weeks. It was positive (scary) . Finally they started me Magnesium Sulfate, YUUUUUCK! They administer this drug through an IV and it makes you feel awful. I was on it for an entire 24 hours and it seemed to be doing the trick. However, I was on complete bed rest and could not even get up to go pee and let me tell you peeing in a bed pan is nooooooo fun! But it was all worth it if it meant keeping little Holden where is he supposed to be for the next eight weeks.
The contractions seemed to subside for a while and all the nurses dubbed my uterus as an "irritable uterus" because it never really stopped acting funny. But since the contractions were under control, they took me off the Magnesium for at least a little while. Everything looked good and we thought I was going home Monday but then Sunday night the contractions started up again and so did the drugs. Once again, I was feeling like POOP but the drug worked it's magic again and the doctor felt as though they had done everything they could to stop the labor for now. So he sent me home on an oral medication to control this "irritable uterus" of mine!
We have been home for a week and I am on complete bed rest (only able to get up for the restroom and a shower). Dave, Jared and I are all staying at my mom's house so that Dave can still go to work while my mom waits on me hand and foot. She is doing an amazing job and I can not thank her enough. We have now passed the 33 week marker and I can feel Holden getting bigger and stronger with every passing day. This experience was super scary and everybody was shocked at how well I held up, except for one emotional breakdown when my brother called, I was very calm and confident that everything would be okay for at least a little but longer. Like Jaime said, I think I was already in Mommy mode and knew that very best thing for my baby was to remain calm. With the help from the nurses, my mom, my wonderful friends and family that have kept me sane by visiting and my amazing husband, Holden is safe for now. They did give me steroid shots for his lung development just in case my uterus can not perform for as long as it should. For now we are taking it easy in bed, monitoring my contractions closely and hoping and praying for the best. Friday we will be 34 weeks, which means his lungs will be 36 weeks thanks to steroids, so we are getting closer to being in the "safe zone". We would like him to stay put for another three to four weeks minimum but we will deal with whatever is thrown at us together. Thanks to everybody for the love and support.
